A life in darkness

Paula and Gabriela, alongside their siblings, lived a miserable existence within a small room without electricity or running water.

The conditions these children were living in were some of the worst I have seen in Romania. Although we tried to work with the parents to improve the situation it was clear they were not capable.

Over a period of 18 months these conditions were filmed and photographed in order to prove to the authorities they were living in neglect. Despite an initial denial by the authorities as to the severity of the situation after pressure from members of the European Parliament all the children were eventually placed into care.

It was a long process to convince the authorities of the conditions. Paula and Gabriela were let down by those put in charge to protect them and suffered needlessly. In my opinion many other children in Romania suffer the same and are ignored or forgotten by the authorities.
